TEXTURES/How Do You Feel?

An International CGS Online Glass Exhibition hosting 51 selected CGS Members.

This is a selling show, so please contact artists directly to purchase work or make an enquiry.

“Texture can defined as the tactile quality of an object’s surface. Within art, it can appeal to our sense of touch, which can evoke an emotional response. Texture is the feel, appearance, or consistency of a surface. Just like 3D forms, texture can be implied or real. Texture can be created through tactile possibilities: cutting, building, tearing or layering of materials, for example.”

This was a CGS juried show, and was launched on 8th May 2021

Title:Life Cycle

Description: The theme is the cycle of life: cell division and new life; hopeful green shoots; healthy leaves of memory; mature, permanent branches; loss and decay.
Interesting details and textures are used to invite children and adults alike to look deeper. Smooth fused glass elements represent cells dividing. Intricate patterns are made by sandblasting real leaves, where the original leaf leaves its mark on the glass but is destroyed in the process. In painting the window, foliage and other items are used to print onto the glass. Whether people pass by or pause for a closer look, reflections from mirror and lustre glimmer.

Description: The Ostreum series followed on from my Echinus series and my love of manipulating hot glass. The inspiration for this range is the mussel shells you find on rock forms. They are all individual but when they are together they become on rolling texture. Each piece is unique and every piece of glass on the surface is applied individually. They all have their own personalities.

Title:Coriolis VI

Description: The textural effects on the glass can deceive the viewer thanks to the interplay of light and mirror inherent in the material.
Glass is captivating because it allows to work on the surface as well as on the inner matter of the sculpture. Considering the inside of the volume while giving the light an essential role is one of my main concerns.
Pâte de verre allows me to explore many themes like the relation between the outside and the inside, the right side up and the upside down, fullness and void, opacity and transparency.

Title:Textured Circles

Description: In the artwork Textured Circles, the circle is presented as a basic and primordial shape, a circle closes on itself, and therefore represents unity and absolute perfection. I use circles in this artwork, since they transmit me harmony and balance, as symbols, of endless movement in our lives.
For this reason, to represent this concept of constant changes and movements, furthermore to the combination of circles of various sizes, I use different colors and especially varied textures.
We find openwork circles, circles with textures of stripes, points and grains. Also, to enhance the appearance and feel, is added a diversity of finishes, such as glossy, matte, matte, smooth, rough and sandblasted.

Title:Eryngii Jars

Description: Series of blown glass jars with wood-turned lids, as a craft collaboration between Catriona and woodturner Bob Hastie, who lives on the Isle of Mull. These pieces are inspired by their shared love of the woods and being close to the earth. The textures and shapes of the pieces are inspired by the materials of the forest and the mycology life found there. Both Catriona and Bob feel a sanctuary with being close to the land, and in fact, that is how they met.
Catriona started a tributary to her business called FRITH Glassware in late 2019/early 2020 which cemented her belief of touch within her work providing comfort. She wanted to break the barrier between the viewer and the material, by creating tactile work that encourages touch, massages the hand, and promotes wellbeing as a result.

Title:My Desire

Description: My desires are like fire in my soul, drive and excitement - the desire to live
at full speed is like hot. Still pulsating and unshaped, in order to calm them
down. I am going to the wild recesses of the forest at the Jizera Mountains.
Meditating on the river among snowy embankments or freezing winds.
They allow a moment of respite and shape non-volatile thoughts into
an idea that I implement consistently in art. An important topic for me
is emotions and changes. I reflected it with the help of a conscious
confrontation of ice and liquid glass creating a finished sculpture.

Title:"Dancing Fabrics"--2021

Description: After almost a year of struggling to make life and art normal, I started thinking about what makes me happy.Besides my family, of course, are fabrics.I've been surrounded by fabrics all my childhood since my father was a tailor. He passed away very young, so for me, making fabrics out of glass is a way to keep him with me.I wanted to give the glass the movement, softness, and qualities of the fabric. The way I achieve that is by making multiple firings for each piece, so the glass falls and folds on itself. After each firing I position the glass differently to achieve the movement I want.

Title:Blue daisies

Description: A very striking cast glass bowl in a deep blue, each daisy has a real gold lustred centre. The slight opacity of the surface texture is a wonderful contrast to the polished rim.
First I make a model of the bowl, the surface is textured hessian fabric and handmade daisies.
I cast this in plaster and once set remove my model. Gaffer glass billets are placed in the mould and fired for 2 days in the kiln. Once cool the mould is broken away.
I paint gold lustre into the centre of the daisies and fire again to slump into a shallow bowl form.
Then I polish the edges on 6 grits and a cork belt to give a high shine. The reverse is also polished.

Title:Solution-Polution

Description: Fascinated and inspired by lichens and mosses. Lichens and mosses are an important link in the ecosystem: they produce oxygen, protect against erosion, create a favourable microclimate for the germination of all kinds of seeds and fruits and provide a habitat for many small insects. Many mosses are bio-indicators. The mosses literally live off rain, wind and the immediate subsoil, so they are extra sensitive to air pollution. Olivine stones and olivine sand weather away like iron in rust. The mineral olivine reacts during weathering with CO2 (acid) and water, creating bicarbonate solutions. This inspired me to give green granite, the colour of the lichen, a texture with olivine stones, topped with a transparent mouth-blown glass with air bubbles. This top remains symbolically purified by the stone with olivine.

Description: I create a range of glass art works and sculptures using the theme of Petrol Rainbows and representing the my manipulating layers of Iridised glass. These oil and water reactions are a visual treat, everyone one is different and I love to stumble across them when out walking.

The Craving Series consists of a number of circular panels of varying sizes, from 5cm (the smallest) to 28cm (the largest). These can be purchased individually or as a set and are designed to be versatile, displayed in any formation the buyer chooses.

The flip side is that these iridescent rainbows are a form of pollution, petrol/oil being leaked and washed into our waterways. I seek to engage the viewer to contemplate the impact of man on our environment while creating appealing contemporary art for the home or office .

An hour later the grass had imprinted itself into the now melting ice, trapping other random left over autumn leaves, creating an amazing texture of intertwining lines and ice crystals.... lots of photographs later, it became the inspiration for this piece (and no doubt many

Whenever someone passes by waiting for a traffic light, they look down and read these poems while they wait.

Title:When Darkness Falls

Description: A Pate de Verre vessel, hand built in clay, textured with wrapped twine and plastic bags. Black enamel was used inside the wet mould to create expressive mark making and accentuate the surface texture. Although the process for Pate de Verre is long and involves many stages I enjoy the quick, dynamic experience of painting the inside of the mould, before applying layers of fine crushed glass and powder. This vessel is part of a series of emotional landscapes drawn from my imagination.

Title:Trapped in Ice

Description: In January our pond froze over. The ice was surprisingly thick but I manged to break some away and it fell onto the grass. An hour later the grass had imprinted itself into the now melting ice, trapping other random left over autumn leaves, creating an amazing texture of intertwining lines and ice crystals.... lots of photographs later, it became the inspiration for this piece (and no doubt many

Title:Ammonite

Description: The ammonite is such a perfect natural form which cannot be beaten. But polished cast glass produces a conflict of textures between the ribbed spiral form and the smooth, tactile surface which provides a window into the fossil. Varying depths of the form changes the intensity of colour from the glass.
