Title:Invisible Visible

Description: The hollow form head and shoulders are embedded in transparent clear glass and are meant to visualize the presence of absence. The image itself is non existent, formed by the physical removal of the positive after firing. Light is captured at the edges of absence, which is for the artist a metaphor for the light held in the memory of what is no longer present. This seems particularly relevant in the Era of Covid.

Title:Defining edge - Dialogue at the threshold

Description: A form encloses an inner space and is the boundary to the outside. Where there is an opening this links the two.
This textured cast black box is viewed from above into an architectural space, the allure of the 23.5ct gold draws you in but a golden grid prevents access to the deeper interior. The grid is replicated on the sides of the austere exterior. The highly polished edge is the meeting point of the exterior and the interior, a threshold between the two.

Title:Non place

Description: What is the personal emotional impact of a year of lockdown?

This question made me reflect on this piece I made in 2018; it was an exploration into the concepts of cerebral and cognitive interpretations of Marc Ages’ term ‘non-place’, during which I considered the physical and mental human interaction with space, and the potential juxtaposition of place and non-place.

The array of emotions float and interact in the ethereal space, proposing an ominous and infinite state of insecurity; clouding and discolouring our of sense of being.

Title:US

Description: This work was created many years ago.
The idea was to show the importance of the family.
Preserving each one’s own identity, with respectful interaction among its members whose hands converge in the center, emphasizes something unique they have in common, their love, happiness, and values.
Kisses, hugs, were part of our usual life in my country. Such emotional and natural expressions seem unreal in this COVID-19 pandemic because physical contact among relatives of the same family that do not live together, is not recommendable without being vaccinated. Therefore, under these painfully circumstances I would approach the family issue differently, not as I used to.
I never imagined something common those days, embodied in this glass work, would be regarded form another perspective.

Title:Spirits of the sea

Description: Cast glass sculpture based upon my observations of oceanic waves. Inspired by cultural interpretations of the natural world, I aimed to anthropomorphize waves in my own way. Figurative water spirits’ motion beneath the sea’s surface generates wave forms above it. Different perspectives as well as the depth of glass reveal and conceal the spirits questioning their existence. The figures become caught up in the swirling motion losing all control.

Title:Mexican Day of the Dead

Description: This piece of work was made during a week-long workshop at Bullseye Glass in Portland Oregon in 2006. I had travelled from the UK, first to Mexico City and then through Mexico, and on northwards by train in the US. I was inspired by all the colours and imagery in Mexico, particularly by the striped blankets, and celebration of the ancestors. The glass was, if I remember, 9 layers of clear sheet glass, with lampworked parts of the skeleton fused into different layers, and the 'blanket' made from stringers on the base layer. It is heavy!

Title:Smudge Collection

Description: After having won a scholarship to do a Masters Degree in Glass Product Design, I moved to Edinburgh where the scholarship was to take place at Edinburgh Crystal, with visits to the University on a regular basis.

I was quickly fascinated by the traditions, sooty smells, clatter and noise and vibrance of the glassblowing teams. Having already worked in a glassblowing studio in The Isle of Wight, I wishes to combine skills and overlap these with learning from the incredible master blowers in the factory.

The resulting collections were blown and also centrifuged, before being cut and polished by the skilled cutters. My passion for working together with craftsmen is something that has never left me.

Title:Embodiment

Description: 'Embodiment' considers the idea of the Self that continues to ‘be’ despite every moment, every experience, every encounter that takes bits of the body away. In this work, the Self is removed from myself as both the maker and the model. The piece is a casting, a type of self-portrait, and a shell of myself all at once. I made a cast of my torso and then used that as a mould for my own modified pâte de verre technique to create a lacey, extremely light glass work, pushing the material to its limits for holding the form. For me, after a year of the pandemic, this piece has taken on new meanings connected to constant thoughts of the heath, fragility, and temporality of the body juxtaposed with contemplation on the strength and resilience of the Self. I like to display this piece by hanging it from one translucent strand of wire, allowing it to turn the draughts of air and enabling light to catch the unique qualities of the aventurine blue glass, changing the viewer’s perspective.
