International Open Exhibition: “HANDS ACROSS THE WORLD”
11th January to 26th February 2021
During the global pandemic, the Contemporary Glass Society has pursued a programme of connecting with and supporting our members through these dark and troubling times. So, our close community of artists wanted to extend hands across the world to invite International glass artists not only from the UK but also internationally who are not members of CGS to take part in a selected online exhibition.
There was no set theme for this show- the CGS wanted international glass artists to introduce themselves to members, collectors and the general public who visit our amazing new website www.cgs.org.uk.
24 International Glass Artists were selected, representing 17 different countries- a truly cross-cultural and extravagant offering of talent from across the globe!
Selected works will also be highlighted on all CGS social media sites.
The Contemporary Glass Society (C.G.S.) is widely regarded as the foremost organisation in the UK for promoting and encouraging cutting edge glass and glass-makers within the wider art world. Website: www.cgs.org.uk

Title:Ginkgo – Memories and the passage of tim
Medium and Materials – Coe 96 Sheet Glass, powders, and Frit
Through my art practice I like delve into philosophical juxtapositions found in the natural world by creating works that drift between an aesthetic that is suggestive of a mood or emotion and forms that may be imaginary or based on known, but not always recognised natural structures.
The Ginkgo tree is known for its herbal properties relating to improving memory. I have used the passage of the seasons and the changes in the Ginkgo leaf colour to visually describe the accumulation of memories throughout and beyond our lives. From the vivid green of our youthful memories to our often golden recall of those memories. On to our reminiscence of those who have passed into that other ethereal world beyond.

"I spend a lot of my time running in beautiful hilly surroundings in the area where I live. As I am really fascinated by nature in all seasons, I created a series of glass objects inspired by upcoming winter. Mountains here in winter season are covered with snow, trails are often frozen and as far as the eye can see you are surrounded by a white glittering landscape. I designed my glass objects as organic forms frozen in time and ice."

"My glass objects only have a visual function, in contrast to architectural structures. But they do tell a story and are conceptual in a way no building could be. As an architect you create space with the help of glass walls and facades. My glass objects only create space in a figurative sense. They are a metaphor for the literal space that architecture provides."

“When a crowd moves, it is very similar to the movement of water, which in turn resembles the way trees and plants grow. It is a structure that is shared by all life, even by all material. even lightning with its branches resembles a tree. ”

You will find this quote in my studio. It describes exactly what I recognize in my drawings and what I made in this installation. I get inspired by nature, find structures there that I use in a drawing. I think I draw something quite unique and then I recognize the drawing in something else. It is proof that I am connected to everything around me, that I am that structure that is shared by all life. That structure is stored in my unconscious brain. And when I work, engrave or draw, that structure comes back to consciousness."

I have been always been attached to fabric since my childhood as my father was a tailor.My father passed away very young. Making fabrics out of glass is for me a way to keep him with me.We use to call “El Taller” to my father workshop.In an early exhibition I reproduce “El Taller” in glass as an homage for him.In this recent work I focuses on the memory of my father’s chair with fabrics all around.

A statement for each work:
The backpack object encapsulates a history, a usage, the trace of time.
Glass has the capabilities to capture the details, the pleats, the textures of an object. It is able to capture the object´s memory, to apprehend it and freeze it.
The backpack had an original functionality, to be loaded and to be carried.
In the object such functionality and materiality come into tension: it has been made to be loaded and carried, and it faces the impossibility to do so. It seems that anything else can be loaded or carried anymore by these 15 kilos of solid glass.
Then, what does this heavy and uncomfortable load unveil us?
Note: Currently, I am interested in recycling, therefore I reuse material from old objects which have an emotional connotation to me and use non-artistic recycled glasses

Title:Majesty
Majesty is a cornerstone artwork selected from our Palia Sofia limited series.
From the Greek "paliá sofía" meaning old wisdom, this series draws from old world glass processes, geometric pattern, and gilding techniques to create objects that feel both classic and timeless but also accentuate the dynamic nature of the Aytac Davids signature design.
The style of these pieces is inspired by the famous Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey. Constructed in 537 AD the architectural wonder began as the patriarchal church of the Eastern Orthodoxy and over the course of history was reimagined as the land transitioned from Byzantine, Latin, Ottoman, and finally to modern Turkish rule. The amalgamation of influences and iconic styles become a metaphor for the collaboration and artistic evolution of Ekin Aytac and Joshua Davids.

Title:Stricken by Sudden Sunshine
Medium & Materials: Kiln cast,cut and polished uranium glass
Glass art combines hard physical work with craftsmanship, manufacturing technology with subtle mental processes. These are the aspects that make glass art so attractive and also so hard to master. Stacho apparently chose the triangle as a symbol of intuitive search for perfection and a balance of all these elements of glass art – the ideal perfection of the artist’s vision which is being constantly disturbed and interfered with by human imperfection and the random interventions resulting from the unpredictable nature of the glass itself. It is well known that glass always follows its unpredictable essence, and only master artists come close to commanding it.
Basic geometrical forms are invaded by the artist’s intent while retaining a striking resemblance to patterns defined originally by Mother Nature – melting ice or freezing liquid, meteorite minerals or transparent substances, all colliding in a dynamic environment of physical natural relations and human imagination.

Title:Plutchik's Dice
2020
In 'Plutchik's Dice' I have explored emotional states. Psychologist Robert Plutchik's Theory of Emotions classified emotions into eight primary states - anger, fear, sadness, disgust, surprise, anticipation, trust and Joy. I have transposed these onto an eight-sided dice where each face represents an emotion. One face is always hidden, though you are able to see through to other sides or emotions. A reflection that life is not that simple and emotions are hard to define, sometimes hidden and often confused.
The octahedron shape makes it impossible to gain an understanding of all sides at once - just as it is impossible to categorise a person or their emotional state fully. Sometimes emotions are glimpsed but societal constraints mean that often, emotions are controlled and displayed only as deemed appropriate by others.

Title:El Dorado - Balsa Muisca
Medium & Materials: Gold powder, Glass - Fusing technique.

"El Dorado - Balsa Muisca -I made this glass piece following the exactly asymmetrical design of the original gold piece located at El Museo del Oro en Bogotá, Colombia. Glass fusing, gold powder were the materials I used for this piece.
The Balsa Muisca, is a precolombin piece of art made in the 600 and 1.600 years b/C and represents the legend of the lost city of El Dorado where gold was present everywhere. The sculpture represents the ceremony of the Muisc chief, which used to take place at Guatavita Lake. During the ritual, the heir of the chieftainship (Zipa) covered his body with gold dust and jumped into the lake along with other gold offerings to the gods."

Statement: The turbulent year of 2020 brought forth two events of international importance. Covid 19 underscored that neither rich nor poor country was prepared for this pandemic. In countries wealthy as well as developing, the unfortunate, the unemployed, the poor and minorities suffered to a greater proportion than the middle class or above. The Black Lives Matter movement, which coincided with a contentious election in America, recognized the injustice that was being perpetrated upon people of color and how this cuts across the fabric of American society.

Title:Majesty
Majesty is a cornerstone artwork selected from our Palia Sofia limited series.
From the Greek "paliá sofía" meaning old wisdom, this series draws from old world glass processes, geometric pattern, and gilding techniques to create objects that feel both classic and timeless but also accentuate the dynamic nature of the Aytac Davids signature design.
The style of these pieces is inspired by the famous Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey. Constructed in 537 AD the architectural wonder began as the patriarchal church of the Eastern Orthodoxy and over the course of history was reimagined as the land transitioned from Byzantine, Latin, Ottoman, and finally to modern Turkish rule. The amalgamation of influences and iconic styles become a metaphor for the collaboration and artistic evolution of Ekin Aytac and Joshua Davids.

Title:Stricken by Sudden Sunshine
Medium & Materials: Kiln cast,cut and polished uranium glass
Glass art combines hard physical work with craftsmanship, manufacturing technology with subtle mental processes. These are the aspects that make glass art so attractive and also so hard to master. Stacho apparently chose the triangle as a symbol of intuitive search for perfection and a balance of all these elements of glass art – the ideal perfection of the artist’s vision which is being constantly disturbed and interfered with by human imperfection and the random interventions resulting from the unpredictable nature of the glass itself. It is well known that glass always follows its unpredictable essence, and only master artists come close to commanding it.
Basic geometrical forms are invaded by the artist’s intent while retaining a striking resemblance to patterns defined originally by Mother Nature – melting ice or freezing liquid, meteorite minerals or transparent substances, all colliding in a dynamic environment of physical natural relations and human imagination.

Title:Plutchik's Dice
2020
In 'Plutchik's Dice' I have explored emotional states. Psychologist Robert Plutchik's Theory of Emotions classified emotions into eight primary states - anger, fear, sadness, disgust, surprise, anticipation, trust and Joy. I have transposed these onto an eight-sided dice where each face represents an emotion. One face is always hidden, though you are able to see through to other sides or emotions. A reflection that life is not that simple and emotions are hard to define, sometimes hidden and often confused.
The octahedron shape makes it impossible to gain an understanding of all sides at once - just as it is impossible to categorise a person or their emotional state fully. Sometimes emotions are glimpsed but societal constraints mean that often, emotions are controlled and displayed only as deemed appropriate by others.

Title:El Dorado - Balsa Muisca

"El Dorado - Balsa Muisca -I made this glass piece following the exactly asymmetrical design of the original gold piece located at El Museo del Oro en Bogotá, Colombia. Glass fusing, gold powder were the materials I used for this piece.
The Balsa Muisca, is a precolombin piece of art made in the 600 and 1.600 years b/C and represents the legend of the lost city of El Dorado where gold was present everywhere. The sculpture represents the ceremony of the Muisc chief, which used to take place at Guatavita Lake. During the ritual, the heir of the chieftainship (Zipa) covered his body with gold dust and jumped into the lake along with other gold offerings to the gods."

Statement: The turbulent year of 2020 brought forth two events of international importance. Covid 19 underscored that neither rich nor poor country was prepared for this pandemic. In countries wealthy as well as developing, the unfortunate, the unemployed, the poor and minorities suffered to a greater proportion than the middle class or above. The Black Lives Matter movement, which coincided with a contentious election in America, recognized the injustice that was being perpetrated upon people of color and how this cuts across the fabric of American society.
