Sculptural Slumping Mastercalss
£375 (max 3 students)
Covid 19 NOTE: the course is limited to 3 students to allow for optimal social distancing. Attendees are asked to bring their own masks and required to wash their hands regularly. The studio has ample airflow and lots of light.
This course is meant for experienced kiln-formed glassmakers but other students will gain insights into novel glass forming processes. Students will be prompted to investigate their sculptural ideas and see how natural movement can be created in their kiln work through props and supports. We’ll achieve this through a series of technique demos, visual presentations (explaining my own processes and other artists work) and two slumping projects.
Working with both float and Bullseye glass, three kiln forming techniques will be explained: ceramic slip cast moulds (like store bought slumpers but your own design); hardened fibre blanket moulds; carved refractory moulds. Extensive course notes with sample firing programs are provided along with all mould-making materials. You’ll need to bring your own glass: 30 x 40cm 4mm sheet of float glass and the same sized piece of Bullseye glass (equivalent in several pieces if preferred). These techniques are suitable for both fused and kiln cast work. Students will be given a short homework brief before the course to produce small models exploring movement through other materials.
Cost: £375 per person, includes materials and firings. We’ll go next door to a pub or café for lunch or students can bring a packed lunch. Accommodation information is available on request. Full payment confirms a place.
Location: The Laurels, Goose Green, Gomshall, Surrey GU5 9LL. There is plenty of parking on the green near the house where my studio is in the garden. Also I can collect students from Clandon or Gomshall Stations if necessary.
