2022 is a spectacular year for the Contemporary Glass Society.  From humble beginnings 25 years ago, it has grown over the years into a thriving and proactive society supporting a membership of over 1,000. 2022 is also the UN designated International Year of Glass, so this is our opportunity to promote to the world the glorious material that we all love.

To highlight our anniversary, we are hosting a number of online and live exhibitions around the UK plus running monthly themed events online including International Days, talks, demonstrations etc.  As part of these celebrations, the Contemporary Glass Society (CGS) is delighted to be working in partnership with the Craft Centre & Design Gallery, Leeds. Our joint exhibition will be featured in this beautiful, Victorian building located just off the city centre.

Applications were encouraged from all CGS members with a special emphasis on our members located in the North-West.  CGS approached the Craft Centre and Design Gallery because of its ideal location in the vibrant city of Leeds and also because of its reputation for supporting both new and established artists and for bringing together the very best of handmade contemporary art and crafts.

The work in the exhibition will be divided into 2 sections so that the work of all the twenty five artists selected can be shown to their full advantage.  They selected artists for part two are:

Part two - Saturday 11th June to Saturday 23rd July

Effie Burns, Kate Jones/ Stephen Gillies, Steven Graham, Catherine Mahé, Caroline Moraes, Katherine Park, Verity Pulford, Karen Redmayne, David Reekie, Penny Riley-Smith, Elizabeth Sinková, and Samantha Yates.

Susan Purser Hope the CGS Chair, who was on the selection panel said, “It is extremely exciting to have the opportunity to exhibit in such an impressive location as part of our celebratory tour around Great Britain.  It was exciting viewing the work of a range of artists demonstrating such variety and imagination.  We are all really looking forward to the rest of 2022 which is continuing our dazzling year for contemporary glass!”

Florence Hoy, Director of the Craft Centre & Design Gallery, Leeds said: “As it’s a very special anniversary for both of us this year (40 remarkable years for us and 25 for The Contemporary Glass Society) and it’s the International Year of Glass, we jumped at the chance of this fantastic opportunity to bring some outstanding glass to the city of Leeds, and to give it the spotlight it so rightly deserves.”
