We invite you to create a stunning celebration of glass, one that displays dazzling originality along with a virtuoso use of techniques.  The aim is not only to celebrate 25 years of the Contemporary Glass Society but also to stop visitors in their tracks with a work that sparkles and delights.  This is your chance to create the piece of contemporary glass artwork you always dreamed of!

The location offers a great opportunity to feature a hanging glasswork (see photograph below) and the Museum has a winch with up to 200 KG max weight for sculptural glass pieces.  However, all other 2 and 3D glass art forms will be considered. Please note that hanging works will have to be accompanied by a Health and Safety Risk Assessment and may require Structural Engineer approval. (Any costs incurred for this will need to be taken into account as part of the funding available.)

We welcome tenders from both individual artists along with collaborative proposals.

The Commission: We are pleased to offer £4,000 jointly funded by the Contemporary Glass Society, (through donations from our Collector Members) and Stourbridge Glass Museum for a newly created piece of work. This money should include designing, making and delivering the work to Stourbridge Museum by Monday 22nd August 2022.

2022 is a spectacular year for the Contemporary Glass Society and Stourbridge Glass Museum.  From humble beginnings 25 years ago CGS, has grown into a thriving and proactive society supporting a membership of over 1,000. After many years of fundraising and hard work Stourbridge Glass Museum finally opens its door to show a unique and comprehensive collection of glass trough the ages. 2022 is also the UN designated International Year of Glass; so, this is our opportunity to promote to the world the glorious material that we all love.

The selection will take place in November from submitted applications, The panel will be CGS Board members, Museum Staff and Trustees. Please ensure your intentions are clear and precise.  A short list of 4 will be selected from original applications.  The four finalists will be asked to attend an online interview on Monday, 6th December (Please only apply if you are available on this date).

The winning artists will be informed by 15th December. 50% of funding will be released at this time and the remaining monies on delivering and installation of the piece.

The work;

  • Can be a collaboration with another member but you would share the commission fee

  • Can combine different materials or found objects but have at least 50% glass.

  • It must be possible to deliver the finished work to Stourbridge Glass Museum by Monday, 22nd August 2022 and supervise installation should that be necessary.

  • We welcome, hanging work, wall pieces as well as plinth based work (All work must reach Health and Safety standards).

  • Work must be resilient to both heat and light as it is not possible to control environmental factors in all locations within the Museum.
