Artist in Residence (Collection/ Photographer)
A research period getting to know the organisation and staff, with access to related pieces of archival material and the collection.
Initially offered as a 4-week residency.
Photographer-in-residence connecting with North Lands Collection. As part of our digitisation ambitions, we are looking to appoint a photographer to spend time on campus working with the staff team and broader studio users. We are looking for a practitioner who has an interest in collections and whose practice embraces the opportunity to co-author the project with others. As a starting point the practitioner will work with the staff exploring the purpose and some of the themes of the collection and the studio site.
The project aims to connect the organisation with the local community, using the rich heritage of the collection and associated archive as a stimulus for discussion and creative activity. The project looks to explore intergenerational engagement throughout the activity.
Using the Collection as a starting point to develop an online repository of the 27-year collection, the project will also result in a permanent display of new photographic work, exhibited throughout the campus building. The longer-term aim is to examine the interest in establishing a local photography group, which will continue to run as a self sustainable initiative once the photographer has finished their initial residency.
The residency will be offered over 4 weeks. Including:
– Research onsite visit to establish project and discuss project with NLC staff and meet participants, arrange set up of photography suite.
– Onsite documentation/ photographing the collection.
– Community engagement talks and workshops.
– Round up/ final report/ exhibition.
The artist will be expected to live and work in Lybster for the residency.
North Lands Creative will provide access to our Alastair Pilkington Studio and on-site accommodation for the duration of the residency.
The selected artist will also be expected to provide two talks or presentations about their work over the course of the project and deliver two community workshops.
The funding available for the residency is up to £3,500. This figure is based on a residency period of 4-weeks spent living and working in the area. This figure is inclusive of artist’s commission fee, material costs and production costs for the final outcome.
The funding available remains the same when applied to artist collaboration, where 2 or a group of artists work as one practice.
To be considered for this project please send the following information to email@example.com by midnight on Sunday 10th July:
– Photographers based in Scotland
