State of Transparency

24&25 May 2019
Symposium and Exhibition

The Large Glass Department is turning 50 and we are very pleased to invite you to our exhibition opening at Looiersgracht 60 and two-day symposium on Friday 24 May and Saturday 25 May at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie

Due to its transparency, glass has changed our vision on the world we live in. Glass and transparency have an inseparable influence on how we construct and organise our society. Transparent structures are claimed increasingly to provide insight into economic and political processes as well as to gain access to our private spheres.

Over the two days of the symposium, the invited speakers will take performative, philosophical and pragmatic positions to think through what are the implications of transparency in the cultural discourse, the transparency of arts education, as well as the future of glass as an artistic medium. We open the programme on May 24th at the Rietveld Academie including an open atelier presentation by the current glass department students, followed by a party hosted by Van Tetterode Glass. The second day concludes the symposium and brings us to the opening of the exhibition State of Transparency, a collaboration with and hosted by Looiersgracht 60.

The State of Transparency symposium programme includes Cissie Fu (Dean of Culture + Community, Emily Carr University), Dafna Kaffeman (Artist, Glass Department Alumni), Jeroen Boomgaard (LAPS, Rietveld Academie), Richard Meitner, (Artist, former head of Glass Department) and Tim Ingold (Chair of Social Anthropology at the University of Aberdeen, author).
