Recollection: Memories in Glass

Memories in Glass
21 January – 2 February 2020
About the Exhibition
‘Memories warm you up from the inside. But they also tear you apart.’
Haruki Murakami, Kafka on the Shore

Just Glass’ latest show focuses on memory and recollection in all its diverse forms —
everything from personal reminiscences to nostalgia, from the science of memory to the
commemoration of moments in history. Each piece in the show has been inspired by
memories and created in glass — expect to see a stunning range of glass art, including
decorative and functional pieces, sculptural glass and wall-hung artwork, using a wide
variety of glass-making methods. The show will feature work from internationally renowned
glass-makers as well as from emerging artists.

After extremely successful recent exhibitions in Hertford, Lyme Regis and Twickenham, we
have chosen Espacio Gallery in Shoreditch, London, as our next venue. Espacio Gallery
opened in 2012 in the heart of London's East End art scene, just 100m from the top of Brick
Lane. It was founded by a group of artists working across all contemporary visual arts media
who wanted a space of their own especially designed to meet their needs. Just Glass are
delighted to exhibit in such a vibrant venue.

As well as the main exhibition, Just Glass artists are also taking the opportunity to launch a
gallery shop, featuring smaller decorative pieces that visitors can buy and immediately take
away with them.

Just Glass are pleased to invite CGS Members to an afternoon of ‘Talking Techniques’ at their exhibition ‘Recollection – Memories in Glass’ on Saturday 25 January 2020 at the Espacio Gallery, 159 Bethnal Green Road, Shoreditch E2 7DG from 1.30 to 4.30 (Gallery open 1-7).

How did that artist do that? What cold working was involved? How did they approach their design? Is their work sustainable? We all wonder how an artist has managed to make something or achieve a particular effect, not to copy but to be inspired and to try out new ideas ourselves. To this end Just Glass invite you to spend time with us at ‘Recollection – Memories in Glass’ talking to some of the exhibiting artists to explore these questions and more.
The afternoon begins with the Curator’s Tour – introducing some of the work of the 35 artists represented. Two or three small discussion groups with specific artists will follow concurrently to explore their techniques and approaches (these talks will be repeated to give everyone an opportunity to join more than one artist).
We are finalising our programme but artists giving talks include Cathryn Shilling, Su Herbert, Jessie Lee, Mandy Treptow Rixon and Julie Light.
We look forward to welcoming you at the Espacio Gallery. It is 10 minutes stroll from Shoreditch Station, past Brick Lane and in the midst of this busy and vibrant area of London.

There is no charge for the event but we welcome donations for Tea/Coffee/Hot Chocolate and Traybake towards Just Glass and CGS overheads.
Please let us know you are coming so we can finalise the programme (and make enough cake)
