New BBC TV series offers business boost for glass artists

Are you an amateur glass blower or glass artist who wants to make your hobby a full-time business? If so, independent production company, Flabbergast TV, could have a way to fast-track your new career.

Flabbergast TV is producing a new BBC series all about makers and crafters who want to turn their hobby into a full-time business. It will be called ‘Make It for Market’. They are looking for amateur makers working in all craft disciplines, including glass blowers, furniture makers, jewellers, potters, woodworkers, sewers and artists.

The series will help people on their journey from hobby into a long-term career. It could appeal particularly to those who have just started their business venture and would benefit from some mentoring.

The Make It for Market series will follow a select group of amateur makers as they are mentored through the practicalities and pitfalls of turning a hobby into a business. The expert mentors and show host will guide them through what it takes to transform their hobby into a business, giving them the knowledge and opportunity to transform their lives.

How the series works

Each amateur crafter will be introduced to the ‘maker in chief’ and host of the series (this person is a secret for now but will be revealed soon), and paired up with their own mentor. The amateur and mentor get to know one another, and the amateur shows the mentor examples of their work.

Then the amateur goes through a series of ‘challenges’ to see what they like, what they don’t, what they enjoy most and what kind of maker and seller they want to be. The challenges may include tasks like making their favourite piece, a 4-hour making challenge, a high-end make and an online challenge.

The series culminates at a big market, where the team of amateurs will sell their wares.

Filming will begin in April 2022.
