The Amanda Moriarty Prize 2019

Amanda Moriarty Memorial Prize 2019
The 2019 winner is announced
Amanda Moriarty, a long serving CGS Honorary Treasurer & Board member, passed away in 2017. In memory of her enthusiasm and encouragement of glassmaking we are offering an annual prize.

In 2019 we have a most generous offer from Colin Reid, renowned UK glass artist and Honorary Member of CGS, to give the winner two weeks’ residency in his studio as our prize.
This year’s winner is Cara Wassenberg.
“I am so thrilled to have this opportunity to work in the studio of Colin Reid. I look forward to further the mould making process with the aim of showing a transfer of texture, movement and energy from steel into glass. It will be great to have the use of such amazing facilities and work in an international recognised studio.” Cara Wassenberg

The aim of this year’s prize is to develop new ideas, producing a new piece of work right through to a finished piece. This would be achieved in two parts:
Week One: developing ideas and getting the work in the kiln.
Week Two: Returning to the studio when the work has annealed, to cold work and finish the piece. CGS is also offering £300 stipend towards costs during the residency.
“Thank you to the 21 artists for their proposals. It was hard to select between them, but a lot came down to the clarity of the application and relevance to the brief.
We ended up with a shortlist of two and did Skype interviews. I am delighted to the offer the residency to Cara Wassenberg who put forward an excellent, well thought out and presented proposal. She is a skilled metal worker and will be using the residency to make a more ambitious work with glass and metal using the facilities in my studio.
I am looking forward to having her working here! “ Colin Reid
