“Digital Distance”- Approaches to Digital Technology
The CGS invited member glass artists that utilize new technologies (e.g. within digital fields) within their glass work, to take part in an international online glass gallery exhibition.
What do we mean by digital technology? It can include digital production technologies such as CAD (computer assisted design) & CNC manufacturing (multi-axis milling, laser cutting, 3D prototyping, computer assisted manufacture, etc.).
It can also include digital audio, imagery and video. And works that ‘sums up’ digital technology e.g. pixelation for example.
22 CGS glass artists were selected by the CGS team, to take part in this online exhibition. The resulting work is detailed and considered and interesting to read about.
As with all our exhibitions, this online show will be shown and advertised across all our Social Media platforms.

As part of a residency, I was looking at some rare Next of Kin Memorial Plaques - known as 'Death Pennies' - given to families of those who lost their lives as a result of the first World War. The originals were made of bronze and are approximately 15cm diameter and this is an enlarged version of a rare brother and sister pair.
A trace drawing was made from a photograph, scanned in and then digitally tidied. It was then processed through CAD software and converted to 3D texture. Using CNC techniques, the mould was then carved, and glass full fused onto it.

Details: Cast Bullseye glass, 220 x 220 x 10mm
This experimental piece was made with the help of Fablabs at Plymouth College of Art and KEVICC, Totnes. The digital design was lasercut into acrylic, from which I made a positive and negative mould in plaster. This panel was made with the negative mould. I filled the deeper tracery with fine black frit, then mounded up coloured frit on top., capping it with 6mm Tekta.

"Mobius Triangle"

Details: Lost wax creation based on 3-D printed mold
Imagine a triple mobius . . . you must travel 3 times around the object before you return to your starting point. The negative mother mold for this creation was formed using 3-D modeling software and printing. A wax pour created the positive. After the surface was carved, a plaster mold encased the wax form. Steaming removed the wax and then the cold plaster mold and cold glass went into the kiln. Once fired, cooled down and free from the plaster mold, further cold-working finished the surface before the mobius triangle perched on the stainless steel atop a concrete base.

Profile
1. An outline of something, especially a person's face, as seen from one side.?
2. A social media user's summary of their personal details or current situation.?
3. The extent to which a person attracts public notice.?
4. A record of a person's psychological or behavioral characteristics and preferences.
The work, Profile, consists of 120 individual pieces of mirrored glass in the shape of mobile phones, each bears the portrait of someone who is connected to the artist as a Friend on Facebook. Each piece is connected to others by drawn lines which represent the Facebook connections between people.
Featuring instantly recognisable portraits of real people, literally in profile, this work highlights how today we carry our loved ones and friends in our pocket in much the same way as people have carried photographs or miniature portraits and love tokens for centuries. Our phone is an intimate object. However, our online relationships are often criticised for lacking in depth and being a poor substitute for human contact, but these networks can often sustain us in a real way and allow us to feel connected to a wider network. The mobile phone puts the world in our pocket.
Profile references the contemporary ‘selfie’ culture and Victorian silhouettes, and comments on our timeless fascination with the self, mirroring, friendship and reflection.
“In the making of this work I have spent time with people I rarely (or never) see and had conversations I would not usually have had, I have spent hours making and lovingly polishing each portrait, it has been a privilege.”

Super Yacht tryptique

I sandblasted and hand engraved this yacht across 3 Atlantis Crystal decanters.
The process involved a very technical computer drawing in order to create
the mask for sandblasting after which I used a drill to hand engrave details and
halftones and highlights.
The custom made base was created from reclaimed teak from a wreck off Orkney Island.
The story is machine engraved into the base.
It was a commission.

A Motion Capture recording of a dancer's movements was converted to a CAD type file and then printed with rapid prototype printer. The printed model was molded with silicone rubber and a wax positive was poured. After editing the wax positive the piece was kiln-cast using the lost wax casting technique. the resulting glass casting was coldworked and acid etched.

Collaboration with ceramicist Chris Balmforth. Last year Chris developed a new product called Guilloche which we have been testing for the last year. From our ideas Chris uses the computer to smooth and generate the patterns that create the best tilt and shift after gold and platinum are applied. The digital pattern is then applied to a silk screen and a decal is produced. They are applied to glass and fired. These Bees are combined with black enamel and gold. Careful control of temperatures allows some of the gold to be removed to highlight the pattern.

As part of a residency, I was looking at some rare Next of Kin Memorial Plaques - known as 'Death Pennies' - given to families of those who lost their lives as a result of the first World War. The originals were made of bronze and are approximately 15cm diameter and this is an enlarged version of a rare brother and sister pair.
A trace drawing was made from a photograph, scanned in and then digitally tidied. It was then processed through CAD software and converted to 3D texture. Using CNC techniques, the mould was then carved, and glass full fused onto it.

This experimental piece was made with the help of Fablabs at Plymouth College of Art and KEVICC, Totnes. The digital design was lasercut into acrylic, from which I made a positive and negative mould in plaster. This panel was made with the negative mould. I filled the deeper tracery with fine black frit, then mounded up coloured frit on top., capping it with 6mm Tekta.

"Mobius Triangle"

Imagine a triple mobius . . . you must travel 3 times around the object before you return to your starting point. The negative mother mold for this creation was formed using 3-D modeling software and printing. A wax pour created the positive. After the surface was carved, a plaster mold encased the wax form. Steaming removed the wax and then the cold plaster mold and cold glass went into the kiln. Once fired, cooled down and free from the plaster mold, further cold-working finished the surface before the mobius triangle perched on the stainless steel atop a concrete base.

2. A social media user's summary of their personal details or current situation.?
3. The extent to which a person attracts public notice.?
4. A record of a person's psychological or behavioral characteristics and preferences.
The work, Profile, consists of 120 individual pieces of mirrored glass in the shape of mobile phones, each bears the portrait of someone who is connected to the artist as a Friend on Facebook. Each piece is connected to others by drawn lines which represent the Facebook connections between people.
Featuring instantly recognisable portraits of real people, literally in profile, this work highlights how today we carry our loved ones and friends in our pocket in much the same way as people have carried photographs or miniature portraits and love tokens for centuries. Our phone is an intimate object. However, our online relationships are often criticised for lacking in depth and being a poor substitute for human contact, but these networks can often sustain us in a real way and allow us to feel connected to a wider network. The mobile phone puts the world in our pocket.
Profile references the contemporary ‘selfie’ culture and Victorian silhouettes, and comments on our timeless fascination with the self, mirroring, friendship and reflection.
“In the making of this work I have spent time with people I rarely (or never) see and had conversations I would not usually have had, I have spent hours making and lovingly polishing each portrait, it has been a privilege.”

I sandblasted and hand engraved this yacht across 3 Atlantis Crystal decanters.
The process involved a very technical computer drawing in order to create
the mask for sandblasting after which I used a drill to hand engrave details and
halftones and highlights.
The custom made base was created from reclaimed teak from a wreck off Orkney Island.
The story is machine engraved into the base.
It was a commission.

A Motion Capture recording of a dancer's movements was converted to a CAD type file and then printed with rapid prototype printer. The printed model was molded with silicone rubber and a wax positive was poured. After editing the wax positive the piece was kiln-cast using the lost wax casting technique. the resulting glass casting was coldworked and acid etched.

From our ideas Chris uses the computer to smooth and generate the patterns that create the best tilt and shift after gold and platinum are applied. The digital pattern is then applied to a silk screen and a decal is produced. They are applied to glass and fired. These Bees are combined with black enamel and gold. Careful control of temperatures allows some of the gold to be removed to highlight the pattern.

It speaks of the interconnections between child, (in this case the little girl, mother and father) which delves into the collective unconscious."
