Stephanie Whatley

My personal path to glass has not been a direct one. Originally from Germany, I trained in a subject more related to psychology and therapy, with a focal point in Art Therapy. In 2005 I took classes in stained glass and metal work in Hokitika, New Zealand. I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the possibilities and limitations of both materials. This problem-solving interest is the golden thread weaving through my life and work. My work aims to create a solution to a question or request. This allows me to enjoy commission work and experience this as the challenge of my job, which I am meant to solve successfully while showing respect and sensitivity to my clients.

During my years of self-employment my work has been predominantly commission work. I studied at the City of Glasgow College 2019/20 to enhance my skillset, exploring my own ideas and developing my artistic expression.
With a background in psychological and therapeutic approaches and knowledge in psychotherapeutic frameworks, system-theories as well as constructivism, my personal interest away from commissions lies in capturing associations and networks.
Currently I am experimenting with ideas of nature, nurture, motherhood and modern lifestyle which also touches on our ambivalent connections to the natural world, technologies, and social-economic perspectives.
