Kiln as Chisel with Matthew Day Perez

11-13 May 2017

Subverting typical studio processes, this three-day workshop will explore the kiln as a multifaceted tool for joining, carving, shattering, and polishing. Glass and mould materials will be brought together in unconventional ways to create texture and depth. In addition to utilizing the kiln, you will examine various surface techniques, such as silvering (creating a mirror coating), and numerous hand finishing techniques in the cold shop.

Students will get hands-on experience creating tiles using a variety of techniques, and create a finished piece suitable for display.

Comments on Perez’s presentation at the 2015 Glass Art Society conference: “Inspiring… funny… makes easy sense of the really technical stuff.”

Skill Level – Prior experience in fusing / casting is advantageous.
