The Glass Association together with The Glass Circle is hosting a morning at the historic Christchurch Mansion Museum in Ipswich, IP4 2BE. Christchurch Mansion was built in 1548 and is the home of a great collection of paintings by local Suffolk artists John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough. It also boasts fine wood carvings, tapestries, costumes and a collection of Lowestoft porcelain among other treasures. Part of the collection is a cabinet of 18th and 19th century drinking glasses, many of which are not identified and YOUR help is requested to attribute these items. Brian Clarke and John Smith, chairs of the G.A. and G.C. respectively, will be leading the group
After a buffet lunch at the museum, you are invited to visit John Smith's glass collection at his home in Thorpeness, just north of Aldeburgh, where he’ll both host our viewing of his collection and give an explanatory talk. His main focus has been on 20th century glass from post-war Czechoslovakia, Val St Lambert of Belgium and glass from the UK. There are also many examples of 18th century English and Victorian glass.
