My first encounters with kiln formed glass were on a Foundation in Art and Design course in 2000. I was immediately captivated by the process. I spent 3 years on a part time Fine Art degree before getting my own kiln and following my instincts to make glass !
Peter Newsome PhD, ARBS, RBA is a professional sculptor who specialises in glass sculpture. He has exhibited widely in the UK and in New York and appeared on Sky TV across Europe.
I work with hot glass and cold working techniques and my pieces are sculptural. I like to play with the interior of a blown form creating a hidden world into which you need to look deeper to discover detail. I study at Wolverhampton University on an MA in Design and Applied Arts.
I look at a sheet of glass and listen. There is always a story to hear. Sometimes, when the glass is dark and sleek, it could be about a dangerous crawling snake. Sometimes, when it’s flowing and fresh, it’s about a forest in spring.
But glass always has to talk first. After all, it will have the last word as well (as the years of kiln disasters taught me : -)). I let the material tell me about my next project and only ever so slightly add my own thoughts to it.
The stories are always complex and intricate. So are my designs. I like to mix the rough and edgy texture of the frit with smooth and shiny pieces of glass. Reminding me of the contrasting nature of everything else around.
